Chapter 20

Sisters

W hen I got back to the room, Lili was ready for dinner. “What are we having?” she asked.

I looked down at the floor, where Rochester had gotten hold of a piece of paper and held it between his two front paws as he nibbled on it. When I pried it away I discovered it was a copy of the menu at Olives and Feta that we’d brought home.

“I think Rochester wants Greek food,” I said to Lili.

We’d had such a good meal at Olives and Feta that we decided to drive back there. Rochester was always happy to jump into the car, and Sue Flocky greeted us at the door again.

“How nice of you to come back,” she said. “And you brought your beautiful dog, too.” She reached down to scratch behind Rochester’s ears, but he stepped back behind me.

“You must be a dog lover,” I said, to cover for Rochester’s behavior.

“I am. I grew up on a farm in Michigan, and we had all kinds of animals, but the dogs were always my favorites.”

“What brought you here?” I asked, as she showed us to a table.

“My brother moved here and I came for a visit. I met Aristotle and decided to stay.” She leaned against the table beside us. “For a while my sister was with us, too. We had a difficult childhood in Michigan and we were all ready to leave that behind.”

“Does your sister run a restaurant, too?” I asked.

“I’m the only one who didn’t get the medical gene,” she said. “Jason became a veterinarian, and Athena a nurse.” She wrinkled her nose. “Jason was always better with animals than people, and Athena, well, she wanted to be an operating room nurse, because the patients are knocked out by the time they come to you. Lately she’s been working in the cardiac care unit, where most of the patients are doped up and hooked to a million monitors, so they’re not always asking for things.”

She went off to deal with other customers, and we perused the menu. “Your ears perked up when she said veterinarian,” Lili said. “Did you think she was part of the Mihaly family?”

I shook my head. “No. I remembered the name of the vet who took over Dr. M’s practice. Jason Evangelos.”

“The one who committed suicide? That’s terrible. Poor Sue, to lose her brother like that.”

“I agree.” I looked up and saw Sue coming back toward us. “We’d better decide on dinner.”

We ordered the stuffed grape leaves as an appetizer, and since we knew the portions were large we decided to share the eggplant baked with chickpeas and tomatoes. After Sue took our order, I said, “You must be happy about the new dog park in Centerbury.”

She wrinkled her nose like she smelled something bad. “That’s a bad place,” she said. “You can’t dress it up and forget all the history.” She hurried away.

“You shouldn’t have asked her that,” Lili scolded. “Probably brings up bad memories. Didn’t you say her brother died there?”

“He did.
